MHS’s Bass Elected to American Bandmasters Association

Mason High School Band Director Bob Bass has been elected into the membership of the American Bandmasters Association (ABA).

The current ABA membership is comprised of approximately 300 American and Canadian band conductors and composers who are elected into the organization through a selective, rigorous nomination process.  To be considered, a band director must be nominated by an active member of ABA and a recording of the nominee’s band must be reviewed by the organization. Bass’s election was a unanimous vote by ABA members.  Of the active members, only 30 are high school band directors.

Bass was nominated and sponsored by Robert Jorgensen, Director Emeritus of Bands at The University of Akron, and co-sponsored by Dr. Terry Milligan of the University of Cincinnati; Dr. Bruce Moss of Bowling Green State University; and Scott Cassagrande of John Hersey High School, Illinois.

"I am honored to be recognized for something I do every day," shared Bass.  "I'm blessed to work in the Mason City School district and am incredibly grateful to my colleagues and my students for giving me this opportunity.  Being a member of the American Bandmasters Association means that I will always be connected to music, and music will always be a part of who I am.”

Bass will be officially inducted into the association next March in Reno, Nevada, where he will also be a guest conductor for one of the bands invited to perform at the event.

Bass is in his 29th year of teaching and 15th year as Director of Bands at Mason High School.  Bands under Bass’s direction have performed in Carnegie Hall, Chicago Orchestra Hall, O.M.E.A. State Conventions, Bands of America National Concert Band Festival as a four-time participant, and at The Midwest Clinic. The Mason band program was awarded the prestigious Sudler Flag of Honor in 2008 and the Sudler Shield in 2011 from the John Philip Sousa Foundation. In addition to his duties at Mason High School, Bass has been a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States.
