02/03/10 -- Mason Athletes Recogonized at Signing Event

MASON, Ohio -- The Mason Athletic department held their annual winter National Letter of Intent Signing Event on Wednesday, February 3rd in the high school’s Harvard Room. Family, friends, coaches, teachers, administrators and students were present to witness the achievements of 18 Mason seniors who have made formal commitments to play their sport at the collegiate level. The signings represented thousands of dollars in scholarship money for Mason high school student-athletes at colleges and universities around the country.

"It is such an accomplishment for any athlete to have the opportunity to play intercollegiate sports," said Mason Athletic Director Scott Stemple. "The athletes, coaches and especially their parents should be extremely proud of this honor."

The Mason girl’s soccer team produced 5 signees: Courtney Hoenicke (St. Bonaventure), Kristin Leist (Indiana University), Heather Jung (Tennessee Martin), Megan Frye (NKU), and Kimberly Connor (Ohio Northern).

The Comet Swimming program acknowledged four athletes who are receiving athletic scholarships; Cari Caprio (Tulane), Danielle Jansen (UNC), Kayla Wiemers (Toledo), and Simonne Dubois (Tufts). Additionally, Alex Bollman signed to play water polo at Gannon University.

Two lacrosse standouts signed letters of intent: Scott Spencer (New York Tech) and Cody Nolan (College of Mt. St. Joe). Wrestling State Champion Robert Shepherd made his formal commitment to Ivy League Princeton University. Scott Klever signed for baseball with Xavier University. Colleen Raga committed to Adelphi University of New York for volleyball.

Other signings included; Nick Wehby, football, (Indianapolis), Chelsea Hoffmaster, cross country and track, (Xavier) and girls basketball standout, Kayla Lamotte (Morehead State).

Mason will host a 2nd athletic signing event on May 18th to honor additional Comet athletes who are still considering their formal commitments.
