The Mason Wrestling team won the J Horning Invitational on Saturday, January 23rd. It marks the 2nd time the Comets have won the event that they host each year in honor of their former captain James Horning. Mason bested 2nd place Olentangy by an overall score of 248-212.5 for the title.

The Comets advanced eight wrestlers to the semifinals to help them add to the trophy case a title they also won in 2007. Last week Mason was ranked No. 3 in the Enquirer's Division I coaches' poll. 

Robert Shepherd (140 lb. weight class) was Mason's lone champion.  He defeated Lakota West junior Ty Davis,(130 lb. state runnerup in 2009) 9-3, in a matchup of two of the area's best wrestlers. Both wrestlers went scoreless for the first half of the match before Shepherd got a two-point reversal with 1:04 left in the second period, then steadily built an insurmountable lead from that point on.   Shepherd was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the lower weight classes (103-140) after finishing with two pins among his four victories.
