Niro Wimalasena
Grade: Senior
Sport: Men's Soccer
Season: Fall - 2007/08
School Year

The accolades for Senior Niro Wimalasena, both athletically and academically, are endless.  Not only is the defender the reigning FAVC Player of the Year, but he is also the Senior Class President.  An honor roll student his entire high school career, Niro takes a course load full of AP and Honors classes.  He is a two-time recipient of the William Mason High School Citizenship Award and was the 2006-07 Mason Lions Club Citizenship Award winner.  Niro was a member of the 2005 and 2006 FAVC champions, while garnering Cincinnati Enquirer First Team All City honors in 2006.    The two-time captain of the Boys Soccer team is the definition of a leader both on and off the field.  “In 20 years of high school coaching, I have never coached a better team leader than Niro.  Not only is he an all-state caliber player, but he is also an outstanding young man,” Coach Paul Reedy says.  Niro’s defense has been one of the keys for Mason’s hot start to the season that has the Comets ranked near the top of both the city and state rankings.

About Niro

  • Goals for the season
    • This season our team has the talent and potential to leave a legacy in Mason High School Soccer. Our primary goal this season is to win to the GMC and to establish Mason as a high caliber soccer program.
  • Best memory of high school athletics
    • My best memory of high school athletics was the 3-1 victory over Lakota West last year. This win was the first time in the history of Mason Soccer that the Men’s Varsity team had ever beaten Lakota West. It also was the pivotal turning point that led to the tremendous success we experienced last season.
  • Who is your biggest influence?
    • The biggest influence in my life is not necessarily a who, but a what. Buddhism is founded on the principle of living life in moderation and following the “middle path” in life. This ideology has been instrumental in my development as a person, student, and an athlete.
  • What are your plans for after high school?
    • After high school I plan on pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering while in college. Aside from soccer, I have a tremendous passion for leadership, and Industrial Engineering will allow me to utilize my leadership skills while pursuing my interest in mathematics and science.
  • How would your coach describe you as a player?
    • Coach Reedy would probably describe me as an innate leader and a calm and composed player. I try to keep the game as simple as possible, and I utilize my vision from the back to help direct the team throughout the game.
  • What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
    • The best piece of advice I have ever received is actually from existentialism. A central proposition of existentialism is that existence precedes essence. This concept implies that humans define their own reality. I utilize this belief in the classroom and on the field to remind myself that impossible is nothing, and that I have the power to define my future.
