Mason City Schools Named "Stellar Public School System"
04/18/2008 - Cincy Business magazine (April 2008) says we've done it again- Mason City Schools is a stellar public school system! The magazine ranked Mason number two out of all area tri-state districts. Cincy Business conducted a survey of tri-state schools' performance index, AYP, SAT average score, ACT average score, Advanced Placement classes offered, percentage of seniors taking AP exams, percentage of AP exam scored of 3 or higher (5 is the maximum score), number of school sanctioned extracurricular programs and number of interscholastic boys and girl sports. Mason City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kevin Bright commented, "We're very pleased when others take notice of the special things that are going on in our schools. Whether through arts, athletics or academics, each one of our students is accomplishing great things, and that's what makes our district stellar." The magazine rated communities by looking at the safest places, best schools, lowest taxes and more in 42 tri-state communities. Over-all, the City of Mason ranked number six, and Deerfield Townships ranked 12 out of Greater Cincinnati communities. Mason City Schools is an "Excellent" district, and has been for eight consecutive administrations of the Ohio Report Card. The district ranks fourth in the state for overall student performance, and met Annual Yearly Progress for every subgroup in every school, and as a district. Junior Scores Perfect SAT
04/18/2008 - He did it! Scoring a perfect SAT is a huge accomplishment, yet humble Ray Wang took it in stride. "I never expected to get a perfect score. Really, I just tried to do my best," said Wang. The Mason High School junior score a perfect 2400 on the SAT college entrance exam. Of the nearly 1.5 million students who too the test last year, 29 scores a 2400, according to the College Board, which administers the test used by many colleges to decide which student to admit. "I really tried to pay attention in class. AP chemistry really helped me," said Wang. Wang took the PSAT, as well as took the SAT during the Midwest Talent Search while he was in grades six, seven, and eight. While he had performed well, he never came close to a perfect score before, and he was nervous about the writing portion of the test. In 2005, the College Board added a writing section, raising a perfect score from 1600 to 2400. Wang learned the news when the scores were posted online. "We are so very proud of Ray. He's a wonderful young man who has achieved an awesome accomplishment. We are very proud of him!" said his counselor Phyllis Bell. Wang participates in Science Olympiad and the Academic Team. He's considering applying to Washington University or John Hopkins and plans to study bio-medicine. Wang is the son of Bingshi Wang and Ming Jiang of Mason.
